"Snow Day"

Do you remember snow days? You’d go to bed unable to sleep just hoping and sometimes praying that the weatherman’s forecast of snow would become a reality and school would be canceled! The most thrilling snow days were when there was no prior warning, just a fresh blanket of snow on the ground. You woke up and mom said, "No school today!"

Of course there were those who still had to get up and get going. For them snow days weren’t thrilling at all. Although it may have been thrilling but in a totally different way. Hats Off to these first responders, folks who go ahead of us preparing the way, and responding to the emergencies that do not tarry for bad weather.

However, for many of us, especially as children, a snow day meant we were the master of our own day. Up and at ‘em early, grab some breakfast, and out the door in the snow! It really didn’t matter what we did, whether shoveling a driveway or a sidewalk, sledding, ice skating or making snow angels, we were having fun!

Now that we are adults, snow days have a different affect on us. We are still glad for the change in routine (mostly). Some of us still make a bee line for the outside where our inner child is allowed to act out. For most of us though, a snow day is a day to relax a little, reflect a little, sleep late, maybe read a book, catch up on some old project, cook up a storm, eat that bread and drink that milk you stood in line to buy at the store yesterday, or find some other equally significant activity to pass the day

The one reality of a snow day for all of us is that no matter how self-reliant we may claim to be, there are situations beyond our control. The weather is just one of them.

May we recognize God’s presence and guidance even on snow days.

We Labor together with God,
